Arkaba Homestead

Set amongst 60,000 acres on a private wildlife conservancy, Arkaba boasts private rooms within a beautifully restored homestead. Guests enjoy a verandah offering lovely rural views and a guest lounge with a fireplace. Originally built in 1856, this property backs onto the Elder Range and Wilpena Pound in the Flinders Ranges. An infinity pool overlooks Arkaba Creek while dinner is hosted on the terrace overlooking the ranges.

Your Arrival

Arkaba Conservancy is located in South Australia, on the southern edge of Wilpena Pound and the Ikara-Flinders Ranges National Park.

  • Car hire: The drive is sealed tarmac all the way from Adelaide to Arkaba Conservancy and a 4WD is not necessary.  From Adelaide – allow 4.5 to 5 hours drive (approx. 405 kms)
  • Shared and private road transfers / air transfers: can be arranged.

Your Luxury Stay

Arkaba Homestead: Luxury outback oasis with a nod to its pastoral heritage. Friendly, personalized service with attention to detail. The original layout of 1850s’ homestead has been retained, delightfully making all of the five guestrooms unique.  Four are located in the homestead, while the Coachman’s Cottage in the corner of the garden provides a fifth guestroom and is ideal for honeymooners.

Dining

Hosted dinners and sharing stories with field guides and fellow guests provide an atmosphere more akin to staying with friends in the country or at a safari lodge. Dining around an old wool classing table on the outdoor terrace is a special and uniquely Australian experience. A firepit in the corner of the garden provides a great spot to retire to after dinner with a glass of wine or port to watch the stars appear over this ancient landscape.

Your Experiences

Your stay at Arkaba includes twice-daily, safari-style exploration across our 60,000 acre conservation property. These experiences maximise wildlife viewing potential in the varying terrains, take in some massive vistas, and encourage being out at the best times of day for beautiful light shows – early morning & late afternoon (throughout the year). Twice daily guided wilderness safaris may include 4WD safari in an open top vehicle, guided walks, a visit to our wildlife hide. For longer stays, off-site activities may also occur.

Conservation Matters

One of Arkaba’s key aims is to use tourism to educate guests about the plight of Australia’s wildlife and environment. Gaining a true insight into what’s involved in conservation is one of the most rewarding experiences to be had.

Guests can also join their mission to restore Arkaba’s biodiversity with some hands-on conservation activities. These can include tracking a radio-collared feral cat with a telemetry device, setting up the trip cameras that monitor key sites across the property, looking for signs of vegetation critical to endangered animals, or joining a biologist on land surveys.
